When you go to eat a meal and then you sit there for a bit, you wonder how long you have to wait to brush your teeth.

While some think that once you have had a meal that you can go right into the bathroom and brush away and this might not necessarily be true.

Here are some general guidelines on what you should do and how long you should wait when it comes to brushing your teeth after you eat any meals.

Brushing After You Eat and the Wait

Once you eat a meal, as long as nothing is acidic in what you eat, then you can brush right away. However, sometimes the acidity is hiding in the food that you eat.

This is why many of the major places, such as the Mayo Clinic are recommending that everyone wait at least 30 minutes after eating to brush their teeth. This is because they will obtain better results when it comes to brushing.

When acidic items are left sitting on the outside of the teeth, this weakens the enamel. When you brush while the enamel is weakened, this can break down the outside of the teeth much faster.

Giving the teeth at least 30 minutes to reduce the acid and to neutralize the enamel and bacteria in the mouth, you can ensure that you are able to brush safely.
